Who am I, and what is scratchboard?

Hi, I’m Andrea! I’ve been working professionally in scratchboard for over 20 years, with an emphasis on fantastical styles and whimsical creatures. I started in illustration, stumbled on scratchboard in high school, and haven’t looked back since.

Scratchboard is a black india ink covered clayboard. The black ink is removed by scraping, or scratching, using an xacto knife, revealing the white clayboard underneath - one single stroke at a time. The process is time-consuming, but I find it very meditative. Once the black and white image is completed, I ink the white areas with watercolor.
